Getting the Job

Before you can start the degree program, you must be employed by one of our sponsoring employers. We will put you through a preliminary interview, we discuss your career aspirations, and we assess your particular skills.
If you are successful and you decide to proceed, your report will be circulated on a shortlist to the employers. The employers then interview the candidates and issue letters of offer. If you accept an offer, you proceed to summer school on salary.

Starting Work The Type of Work

At the end of summer school, you will report for work at a location determined by the employer. You may have some say in this although chances are you will have to relocate. If this is a problem, we need to know about it before you commit to the program.

Over the three years, you will be treated as a normal graduate hire and do the same level of work. You will have a major advantage, however, because the BIT (Mainframe Computing) at the University of Canberra will better prepare you for the mainframe environment than the normal degree program. After the first summer school you will hit the ground running; the difference is noticeable.

There are many roles in a large corporate IT function and when you get into the second year you need to think about where you would like to go. There are a number of career options and these will start to open up to you as you progress in your understanding of mainframe technology.

Employment Conditions

Employment is usually on an annual renewable contract subject to satisfactory performance in the workplace and in your study. The employer will set the conditions of employment including salary and leave conditions for summer school. Your sponsoring employer pays for your fees and so there is no HECS beyond what you might have already incurred. No more debt; that's a major advantage. The employer will probably expect you to commit to two-years Return of Service after you graduate. It is your opportunity to consolidate your career path.
